The Hibernia Management and Development Company (HMDC) has reported a high potential near miss that occurred on the Hibernia Platform on Sunday, April 24, 2016.
While laying down drill pipe from the derrick to the pipe deck, a piece of drill pipe was inadvertently released from the Pipe Handling Mechanism causing it to drop approximately 6 metres to the rig floor. There were no workers in the area at the time. Work was halted immediately and a Safety Toolbox talk was held with both day and night shift to review the incident. HMDC is investigating.
