Since July 17, 2019, the Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) has been monitoring Hibernia Management and Development Company’s (HMDC’s) response to the spill of an estimated 12,000L of oil from the Hibernia Platform.
Satellite imagery, vessel and aerial surveillance in recent days have confirmed that concentrations of oil have decreased to the point that mechanical recovery and dispersion operations are no longer possible.
Aerial resources and two vessels in the field are continuing to conduct surveillance and wildlife observations.
The C-NLOPB continues to meet with HMDC as well as partnering government agencies such as the National Environmental Emergencies Centre (NEEC) of Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) and the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), to monitor HMDC’s response.
Approval by an independent Certifying Authority as well as further discussion with the operator is required, prior to C-NLOPB approval to resume production.
The C-NLOPB’s formal investigation into the spill continues.
