The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board
(C-NLOPB) held its second Safety Forum May 14-15, 2012 at the Capital Hotel in St. John’s. The focus of the forum was safety culture.
The Safety Forum provides an opportunity to exchange information and share best practices among offshore stakeholders so that safety issues can be proactively identified and addressed. It is also valuable in identifying possible improvements and assisting the C-NLOPB in setting goals.
Dan Chicoyne, Chief Safety Officer at the C-NLOPB stated that he was very pleased with the turnout and participation level. Over 130 persons who work in the offshore industry, or who are involved in the industry participated in the two day event.
“It is important for the C-NLOPB to obtain the views of persons who work in the offshore industry to help us improve safety offshore. We received very valuable suggestions and insights during the question and answer sessions and round-table discussions,” he said. “This information will be integrated into the work we do and progress will be tracked on the C-NLOPB Safety Forum website.”
Presentations ranged from safety culture assessment and improvement, managing risk and performance-based regulation to technical presentations and training updates. The agenda also included a presentation from the Norway Civil Aviation Authority and several Offshore Helicopter Safety Inquiry Implementation Team members.
The establishment of safety forums was a recommendation of the Offshore Helicopter Safety Inquiry (OHSI). Safety Forums will be held twice annually and will focus on offshore safety. A link to the Safety Forum website is as follows http://www.cnlopb.nl.ca/safetyforum.shtml
