C-NLOPB Seeks Public Input on Draft Scoping Document for Labrador Strategic Environmental Assessment Update

For Immediate Release
May 5, 2017

The Canada-Newfoundland and Labrador Offshore Petroleum Board (C-NLOPB) is inviting comments on the draft Scoping Document for the Strategic Environmental Assessment (SEA) Labrador Shelf Offshore Area Update. An SEA is a broad-based approach to environmental assessment that examines the potential environmental implications of a proposed program or policy decision. The results of the SEA update will be used in part to assist the Board in determining whether land rights issuance that could lead to petroleum-related activities should be offered in whole or in part within the Labrador Shelf area.

The C-NLOPB published an SEA for offshore Labrador in August 2008 and is updating the report in consideration of the elapsed time since the document was published. The report is available at https://www.cnlopb.ca/sea.

The C-NLOPB is undertaking the update with the assistance of a Working Group co-chaired by the C-NLOPB and the Nunatsiavut Government, with members from federal and provincial government agencies, the oil and gas and fishing industries, Indigenous organizations, academia, and non-governmental organizations. The C-NLOPB prepared the draft Scoping Document with the assistance of the Working Group. A summary of the draft Scoping Document has been developed and is available in both Inuktitut and Innu-aimun. Written comments on the draft Scoping Document will be accepted until noon on June 2, 2017.

All comments will be posted to the C-NLOPB website in the official language in which they are provided. All identifying information will be removed except the name under which the documents are submitted. If a third party is to be referenced in the documentation, the respondent should first obtain their consent before making the submission. The C-NLOPB takes no responsibility for the content of documentation provided by respondents.

The Board reserves the right to withhold from publication comments that are deemed to be spam or unrelated to the Labrador SEA Update. Comments can be sent to the address below or via email to information@cnlopb.ca.
